The Tower Knight

Judgement

Entry Unknown - Drawn from memory

While there were no existing records that spoke of "The Dawnkeeper" - I was able to locate one that gave an anecdotal account of the entity known as "The Tower Knight".

According to the author:

"No such person has been known to survive an encounter with the Tower Knight, also known as "The Godhorn", however, those that have claimed to hold the construct in their service describe it as a celestial monstrosity."

This would imply that either the author is speaking entirely from conjecture - or that they're among those who held sway over the creature - a possibility I wish I could have found more information detailing.

In any case, I suppose I can now count myself as a statistically unlikely survivor.

Our travel back to the Maelstrom Sepulcher after collecting ourselves in Galderock was largely devoid of Court constructs - which, while I consider this fortunate, the lack of opposition cast a shroud of unease over my companions.

This disquiet was highlighted once we arrived at The Dawnkeeper's chambers fully expecting to see the defunct shells of defeated constructs - but suspiciously finding none.

Obviously this, among other lines of questioning regarding our mysterious author were at the forefront of my mind when we approached the entity - which surprisingly recognized us.

It once again unfurled itself from its stone casement, and after greeting us, posed to us the same question it asked previously.

"Who are you to demand access here?"

Unfortunately, my studies in Galderock provided no records suggesting a "correct" response - and with my whispermarked companion's condition worsening exponentially over the past four days; it's clear we've run out of time.

A truly mournful waste of potential to see this creature destroyed - even if it's a necessary step in halting what I believe could be a world-ending event.

Chylia struck first - an action that rewarded us with the following threat from the now injured Dawnkeeper.

"The Tower Knight comes wreathed in flame and bellowing the name of your sin. Repent now and be judged."

True to form, a deafening and hollow roar arose from beyond the wall - which was followed by the thunderous pounding of what could only be a rapidly approaching colossus.

The Dawnkeeper never spoke to us again, nor did it emit any alarm as before. It merely allowed itself to be destroyed - becoming a formless pile of rubble at our feet.

We scarcely had a chance to jump away from the debris as the juggernaut form of the Tower Knight barreled towards us through the wreckage of the wall.

To expand on what we'd been able to gather from reports - I'd describe the Tower Knight as a host of barely contained wrath disguised as an impartial judgement.

It holds a holy fire within it that escapes from its four faces as light and smoke like a giant furnace. As such, there's no hiding from its sight - or from its four arms, which held a red-hot chain whip, a morning star, and an enormous tower shield - leaving one hand free to call forth the divine energy of our promised judgement.

I can hardly recall how we managed to survive, but suffice it to say that we did.

On close inspection of its smoldering carapace, I found that the creature's chain whip was in truth tethered to it at the neck like an enormous, and broken leash - the last link twisted open as if it had been forcibly pulled from an anchor point.

I managed to pry away the plate that was bolted into place to secure it, and found the underside entirely inscribed with runes - likely ancient Galutian in origin, but it bears more study. I'll be submitting this as a part of my formal report to the head archivist.

In the meantime, we'll have to be on our guard. A leash, even if (or perhaps especially if) broken, would suggest the presence of a master.

A Response

from Head Archivist Ozdevir Austra undelievered and returned four weeks later:

If possible, we would appreciate samples collected from this Dawnkeeper, as well as more detailed notes regarding The Beggar's Court. Has their purpose in the Maelstrom Sepulcher been determined?

Tensions continue to escalate here in Caeryn with talk of the Consecrated Ruin influence spreading across all of Edorin. I've heard rumor that a temple dedicated to Gallus on the outskirts of Mirr fell into an enormous sinkhole recently - severely damaging what protective magicks had been installed there. I fear what will happen if all the leyline temples fail.

As always, your findings have been enlightening, and the university is grateful for your continued correspondence.
