Sabriel Oct 2011 - Oct 2023

Meet my chicken

Her name was Sabriel and she was my little familiar. I'd never had a cat before since my dad is highly allergic (sorry dad), so I decided to put in some volunteer hours at our local shelter just to visit. Naturally I met Sabes the first day I was there and she immediately crawled into my lap and made herself at home.

For a first-time cat owner, I ended up with the most complicated creachur I could find. She was an FIV+ girl with a crooked tail (broken in at least three places), and within the first two weeks of us having her home we had to have all of her teeth removed due to severe stomatitis.

It's easy to look back on this now and laugh. She developed anxiety around her food (not unlike me), and after her surgery it took me a full month to convince her it was ok to eat again. This included me spending most days sitting on the floor caked in cat food from hand feeding her, spending every other day at the vets office because it was the only place she would eat on her own, and driving her around the neighborhood in her box to eat in the car.

She was, if nothing else, full of character. Absolutely ridiculous character.

The day she cracked and started eating like a normal cat came when we were eating tacos in the kitchen and I accidentally dropped a piece of meat on the floor. She horked that thing down like she'd never seen food before. This coming from the cat that would hide under the bed at the sound of spoons in the drawer :|

Ultimately, her life was full of struggles and trips to the vet. I learned how to administer all varieties of medications, and how to monitor blood sugar when she developed diabetes in her old age.

Regardless, she was precious and loved for who she was. She always knew exactly what I needed, and carried herself with a dignity not commonly seen in orange cats. I'm glad I could be her person, and I'll miss her always.

RIP my Halloween bb
